Best dining experience I've had in Houston. From the genuinely welcoming staff, to the food and drinks. The caiman cocktail was the best sotol cocktail I've had (and I'm from that part of the world). I "trusted the chefs" for the tasting menu, and the som paired a half glass of different wines perfectly with each entrée. I started with oysters - WOW, as a raw oyster lover, I never expected to love a grilled oyster like this. Both raw and grilled were amazing, and I couldn't get enough of the pork chop. Service was top notch too, everyone was profesional and friendly; one waiter even ran out to say bye to me since I had walked out while other staff members were busy with a birthday. Price wise, this is reasonable for what you're getting, but it isn't inexpensive. Sit at the kitchen counter if you can. I'll for sure be back. - Esequiel Nathal

Baso Introduce

For Texas food enthusiasts seeking an experience that elevates dining to an art form, Baso in the Houston Heights district offers a singular and unforgettable journey. Far from a typical 'Spanish restaurant,' Baso defines itself as a Houston establishment guided by a strong Basque philosophy, integrating the region's famed live-fire cooking and dedication to exceptional ingredients with innovative, globally-influenced techniques. The name 'Baso,' which means 'forest' in Basque, hints at the primal, yet refined, nature of its cuisine, which often features ingredients kissed by the glow of an open hearth.

This chef-driven spot has quickly earned a reputation among local Texans for its daring menu and sophisticated ambiance, cementing Houston's status as a top-tier culinary destination. The cuisine is focused on small, shared plates—sometimes referred to as tapas-style—but the execution is decidedly high-concept, fusing the best of Texas-sourced proteins and produce with unexpected elements inspired by Basque, Japanese, and Nordic traditions. Patrons consistently praise the "best dining experience" they've had in Houston, highlighting the genuinely welcoming staff, the thoughtful drink pairings, and the complex, unforgettable flavors that make each dish a discovery. This is the place that embodies why Houston’s food reputation continues to soar, offering a dynamic and contemporary take on Spanish-inspired fine dining.

The atmosphere at Baso is moody, romantic, and trendy, creating a truly intimate and seductive setting. The cave-like, sleek dining room features an open kitchen and a blazing hearth, allowing guests, especially those seated at the counter, to witness the live-fire cooking that is central to the restaurant's identity. This theatrical element enhances the "spiffy casual" experience, making it a perfect spot for a special date night or an elevated evening out with a group of food-loving Texans.
