El Tapeo Modern Spanish Kitchen Introduce
El Tapeo Modern Spanish Kitchen brings the vibrant, communal dining experience of Spain straight to the heart of Illinois, offering a culinary escape for local residents. The name "El Tapeo" itself is derived from the Southern Spanish slang "Vamos de tapeo," translating to "Let's go for tapas," perfectly encapsulating the restaurant's focus on shareable, flavor-packed small plates. Located in the upscale suburb of Oak Brook, this dining destination is not just about authentic Spanish flavors; it's about an elevated dining experience, providing a trendy, romantic, and upscale atmosphere that is suitable for every occasion, from a solo meal to a large family gathering.
The restaurant distinguishes itself by offering a menu that covers the full spectrum of Spanish culinary traditions, from casual breakfast items to sophisticated dinner tapas and large, celebratory paellas. Highlights of the menu include classic small plates like the crisp Patatas Bravas ($10.00), the intensely flavored Gambas (shrimp with garlic, white wine, and toast, $15.00), and the sweet and savory Datiles (dates wrapped in bacon with smoked cheese, $11.00). Guests looking for a hearty Spanish entree will be delighted by the Paella selection, which includes the traditional Paella de Mariscos (Seafood), the vegetarian-friendly Paella de Verduras*, and the unique Paella de Carne—a meat option featuring spicy chorizo, chicken, onion, pepper, and garlic. Patrons specifically rave about the Paella with short rib, noting its ability to enhance the dish as a whole.
Beyond dinner, El Tapeo also offers comprehensive breakfast and brunch options, demonstrating its full-service approach. Guests can start their day with Spanish-inspired favorites such as the traditional Spanish Tortilla ($16.00) or the decadent Spanish Eggs Benedict ($18.00). The dessert menu ensures a sweet finish to any meal with options like the classic Churros ($11.00) and the rich Valor Chocolate Crunch Cake ($15.00). The beverage program is equally robust, featuring an extensive wine list—including Spanish Whites like Martin Codax—Champagnes, and an array of Great cocktails and signature Sangria.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Great food that came out quickly. We loved the paella with short rib. You don't often see a paella with a beef option. Note, there wasn't a lot of short rib in the paella, but we liked it that way. It enhanced the dish as a whole. Service was also good. You could see everyone hustling. A kids menu is also offered which was great for my 4 year old. Had a nice view of the sunset and full moon tonight. Def recommend a reservation around sunset.
October 19 · Erika HaubachWhat a pleasant surprise! We were staying in the hotel and piped up for dinner not know what to expect. The waiter commented we’d like the food and he way correct. We order several different tasty dished we shared - every dish was unique with great FLAVOR!
July 02 · Bernard KyleI remember this restaurant being better a few years ago. My family dined here over the weekend and I was disappointed with the food and drinks. The wine list was very limited with grocery store type brands. Maybe there was a list of wines by the bottle that I didn’t see, but it wasn’t offered if so. My husband didn’t receive the cocktail he ordered until multiple dishes had already made it to the table (we ordered everything at the same time). The biggest issue I had though was that the tapas we tried were not what was expected. The “bravas sauce” served with the datiles (which actually don’t even need a sauce IMO) tasted more like enchilada sauce/ chipotle instead of smoked paprika. The gambas al ajillo were not the sizzling, garlicky delicious shrimp I’ve had at other tapas restaurants - they were bland. We ordered a short rib flat bread that was okay, but definitely tasted more like a Mexican flavor profile than Spanish. And the pan de tomate was probably the biggest letdown. Just a sad flat bread with some bland tomato sauce and a bunch of cheese grated over the top. I love this dish at other places where the bread is fresh and crispy and the flavors of fresh tomato and olive oil really shine. Shishito peppers were probably the best dish, but even they needed a little more char. I don’t think they need the aioli on the side - it didn’t stick to the oily peppers very well. The folks in the kitchen should try some more Spanish cuisine and adjust accordingly.Service was more or less okay. The hostess was very sweet. Wait times for our drinks and our check at the were too long. Dining room was chilly.
September 22 · Emily PantekOctopus was flavorful but tough; Empanadas were good, shrimp gambas lacked flavor and short rib paella was mostly just rice.... 9th floor view wasn't much to look at, decent decor, was too loud with people chatter and music too low & not much vibe...little kids from hotel kept coming up and playingon the elevator...and dinner service got better, but started with a 10+ minute wait, not even a greet...had to ask host to remind wait staff of our table...hugely disappointed
May 05 · KC C.First time trying tapas and first time going to El Tapeo and it was delicious! Went for a work outing and we got half of the menu and everything tasted amazing! We did halves on the paella and that was plenty for our group plus all the tapas. Dessert was phenomenal. Can’t wait to visit again for date night or girls night.
