Tempranillo Restaurant Introduce
Nestled in the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley, Tempranillo Restaurant stands out as a culinary gem for Colorado residents and visitors seeking an authentic taste of the Iberian Peninsula combined with innovative Italian flair. Named after Spain's noble grape, this establishment in historic Downtown Basalt is far more than a simple local eatery; it is a destination where internationally acclaimed Madrid native Chef Javier Gonzalez-Bringas and co-owner Laura Maine have spent over fourteen years creating a warm, historic, and upscale dining experience.
Tempranillo perfectly blends the old-world style of Spanish tapas culture with a new-world approach to Italian classics. The extensive menu encourages a social, shared-plate dining style, offering everything from classic Gambas al Ajillo and expertly crafted Spanish meat and cheeseboards to a full selection of paellas, fresh seafood, and robust Italian pasta dishes. The commitment to quality is evident in their selection, which includes a renowned wine list boasting over one hundred hand-chosen Spanish wines.
The atmosphere is a distinct highlight for those dining in the beautiful Colorado setting. Guests can choose between a cozy, historic interior—complete with dark beams, a welcoming community table, and a fireplace—or opt for the gorgeous, year-round heated outdoor patio. This combination of an authentic European menu, a thoughtfully curated wine list, and a beautiful ambiance makes Tempranillo a perennial favorite for lunch, dinner, solo dining, and group gatherings in the Basalt area.
While the atmosphere and the food—especially the black squid ink paella (Arroz Negro) and the perfect cheese plates—consistently receive high praise, the ownership stresses their goal is to provide a comprehensive, welcoming, and authentic experience. They openly encourage feedback to ensure the service matches the high reputation of their cuisine.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Disappointing Service Experience at TempranilloI visited Tempranillo in Basalt after seeing it listed as one of the top restaurants in the area. The setting was lovely, and I chose to sit outside to enjoy the atmosphere. Unfortunately, my experience quickly went downhill due to the service. Our waiter, an older gentleman with gray hair, brought us menus. When I asked him what he recommended or what the best seller was, he gave a dismissive answer: “It’s all good. I can’t pick just one.” I tried again by asking what most people tend to order, hoping for some guidance, but he repeated the same vague response, saying they’re all best sellers.Rather than taking a moment to ask what I liked—chicken, beef, seafood—or making any effort to help me find something I’d enjoy, he made me feel like my questions were silly or inconvenient. I got the strong impression that he didn’t want to be there and certainly didn’t care about creating a good experience for customers.I stood up and left. I don't mind paying higher prices if the service matches the atmosphere and reputation, but I will not dine in a place where I’m made to feel unwelcome or like an annoyance.I’m sure the food may be good based on other reviews, but respectful, engaged service is just as important. I hope the owners take this as constructive feedback and provide additional training to staff on hospitality. After all, a restaurant's job isn’t just to serve food—it’s to make people feel glad they came.
July 30 · Will WynnGreat place for tapas and a lovely atmosphere. Beautiful indoor and outdoor seating, for different ambiance styles. The cheese plate was absolutely perfect. And black squid ink paella is the best! Our server was super welcoming and professional.
June 13 · Vladislava KurshevaI ate here with a big party and got to try a lot of the dishes. Most of the food was fantastic, including the specials. The outdoor area is completely lovely and definitely worth the visit, even if you’re just having a glass of wine. The wine list is extensive and the servers are knowledgeable and attentive. However, if you’re going to charge 40, 50, 60+ per entree, at least renovate your bathrooms. I’ve seen nicer bathrooms in a 7/11. You re charging 5 star prices, so maybe commit all the way.And there’s another review recently about the pállela being bland. I can confirm that.
July 18 · Mac CohenThe food were really good. I forgot to take pictures. We messed up the time on our reservation but they were able to seat us.We mainly got the tapas: meatballs, vegetables, mussels, and calamari dishes. They were all good. The entree was the steak, it was little bland for me and too much fat. Overall food was great. The server is horrible which ruined the dinner. He got me the wrong soda, and never refill my water. He spent most of the his time talking to the table next to us without even looking over to our table. The restaurant is not even big. I had to break up his conversation to asked him to fix my drink and add more water after we ate all of our first course (all those tapas dishes). Not once he came over to check on us once we received our food.He had a different server came up to asked us if we want any dessert. After we said no, he quickly came back with our check within a minute. The runner that dropped off the food was wonderful, I wish the tips would go to him instead.Overall food was good, service was horrid. I would change different server if I ever come back.
September 26 · Kim NguyenWhy? ??!! We loved this place. Most was still good but we’ve been getting the seafood pallia every time we’re in town for literally 5 years. This time is was not good!!!! Used to have a small lobster tail, like 6 shrimp, the saffron rice was delicious and it had small splatterings of some type of cream sauce. This time it was just bad. The rice was soggy, pasty and bland. No cream sauce. No lobster tail, 3 shrimp. It had clams which were so fishy I literally spit it out. The muscles were mushy and bad tasting. Sad! Was one of our favorites, now we’re looking for somewhere new……
