Nonna's Empanadas - Original Farmers Market Introduce
Nonna's Empanadas, located within the historic and vibrant Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles, is a beloved local institution and a true destination for one of the world's most perfect finger foods. While the provided classification is "Spanish restaurant," Nonna's is widely recognized by local Californians and food critics as a purveyor of exceptional, internationally-inspired empanadas, a pastry pocket popular across Latin America, Spain, and beyond. The philosophy here is simple: offer an unlimited combination of flavors in a portable, handy, and delicious package. Nonna's Empanadas stands out by making all of its offerings by hand daily and, importantly, baking them to perfection instead of frying. This commitment to a healthier, baked alternative aligns perfectly with California's focus on fresh and quality ingredients.
What truly sets this establishment apart is the sheer variety and creativity of its menu. With more than 30 flavors available, Nonna's has mastered both the traditional and the truly unique. The fillings are robust, fresh, and often incredibly hot and full when served—a quality frequently praised by repeat customers. The menu covers all bases, ensuring there is a savory or sweet treat for every preference and dietary need. The variety transforms a simple snack into a culinary journey, offering a taste of different global flavors all wrapped in a flaky, baked crust.
The Savory selection is massive and includes popular beef options like the traditional Beef (often featuring olives, red peppers, and eggs), the bold Carne Asada with guacamole and chipotle, and the fusion favorite Philly Cheese Steak. Chicken fans can choose from the classic Chicken, the spicy Salsa Verde Chicken, or the creamy Chicken Alfredo. The Pork category provides excellent choices, from a breakfast-ready Bacon & Eggs empanada to the savory Cuban (featuring oven-roasted pork, ham, mustard, and pickles) and a classic Ham & Cheese—a clear best seller known for its absolutely delicious flavor. Seafood is represented by the fresh Shrimp empanada.
The Veggie options are especially impressive for a quick-bite vendor, catering to a wide audience with items like the Veggie (packed with spinach, broccoli, carrots, peas, and cheeses), the Indian-inspired Samosa Veggie, and the ultimate comfort food fusion, Macaroni & Cheese. To complement any savory choice, Nonna’s is famous for its homemade Chimichurri Sauce, available in both classic and an intensely flavorful spicy 8 oz jar—perfect for dipping and adding that essential zesty finish.
No visit is complete without sampling the Sweet empanadas, which are perfect for dessert or a mid-day indulgence. The top picks include the rich Nutella (often described as coming with Oreo cookies and cream cheese), the creamy Dulce De Leche and Guava options, and the simple but satisfying Apple and Banana fillings. For a truly authentic South American dessert, the traditional Alfajor De Maizena is also available—a corn starch cookie sandwiched with dulce de leche and coconut flakes.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We stopped at the Farmers Market on a Viator Tour for lunch. I chose Nonna’s Empanadas (my husband another restaurant) and it did not disappoint! We shared food and both agreed that his was good but Nonnas was better! You can get two empanadas and a drink for $12.95. I tried the beef and the ham and cheese. Both were listed as best sellers. I preferred the ham and cheese over the beef, not a huge fan of olives in the beef but it was still good. The ham and cheese was absolutely delicious!! Both were very fresh, full of filling and extremely hot. We liked it so much we came back another day on our trip just to eat here again. This time my husband chose to eat here too. He got the Ham and cheese again but I tried the Philly cheesesteak and the margherita and we split a Nutella for dessert. Again, all delicious! Very full and so hot you could hardly eat them! I wished I lived closed so I could eat here regularly.
May 31 · Kelly WilliamsonLoved the variety, size and appearance. Def had to try. The beef and the chicken option I had was dry. Lacked flavor. Filled well with meat and veggies but just didn’t hit for us. The Shrimp was good but surely I would’ve thought the beef and the chicken option would be good. Maybe there’s a fav here for you as there are many options. Clean establishment and nice people.
April 06 · Joseph SheffieldStop by for a quick bite at the Farmers Market on the way to the west side. With all the choices here, this is one of our favorites. They have some really unique empanadas such as Korean BBQ, Mac & cheese, etc. so many to choose from. We had the Cuban and the mushroom empanadas. They were some of the best empanadas we’ve had. The crust was thin (very different than your typical Argentina empanadas and the inside was stuffed, again unlike empanadas at other places. The Cuban one didn’t really taste like a Cuban sandwich, but it was tasty and better than any Cuban sandwiches, even in Miami. The staff was friendly and efficient. We sat at the general sitting area at the Farmers Market with a hot latte for a really enjoyable afternoon snack. Definitely worth a try.
May 28 · Big Fish Dive ClubIt's a real nice shop for a snack or a quick bite between shopping or movies at the Grove !! It's conveniently located next to the Grove .Argentine stuff !! Yay ! They've got nice options for vegans & vegetarians !! My recommendations are BEYOND MEAT empanadas & vegie samosa ones !! Both vegans . And their " BEST SELLER " Guava & cream cheese one is super tasty !! 😋 Like an apple pie 🥧 I love both guava & cream cheese , so, it was a winner !!! Lol. ( I also love apple pies ! ! ) Beyond meat one is super yummy , too ~!!! 😋 Sometimes , they are too salty 🧂 😜, but today it wasn't ! I had those vegan ones 2 , 3 times before . I usually take 'em to go .I highly recommend this place !! I've always been wanting to go to Argentina & not done that , yet ! So, it is a little bite of Argentina I can get here in L.A.!! I believe one piece is around $5 ? So, it's budget friendly also which I've gotta admit I love that about 'em, too ~!! Lol Everything is expensive around here, so , this is very nice & convenient. It was busy there today ! The whole Farmer's market & the Grove were very busy , indeed !! Because , it is such nice weather & a very hot day today !! So, many are out & taking their dogs out, too -! I felt bad for dogs as it's too hot for 'em !! The asphalt is burning 🔥 hot 🔥. I wouldn't take my dog out today if I had my dog !! Nonna's Empanadas is a GEM 💎 ✨️ at the( original ) Farmer's market on the 3rd !!
May 20 · Spark _Overcharged without explanationI ordered a combo of 2 pies and 1 drink with 1 sauce, which should have cost $14.50 after tax, but was charged $19.99 instead. When I came back 15 minutes later to ask for a receipt, the male cashier was somewhat unfriendly and unhelpful. He couldn’t provide an actual itemized receipt—only a credit card sale note—which felt suspicious and intentional. Thankfully, after reaching out to customer service, I eventually received a refund. Still, the poor service and questionable overcharge left a bad impression. Be sure to double-check your total if you order here.
